2014 GO Day
GO Day at Tuacahn
Every year we participate in Get Outdoor Day at Tuacahn.
Part of the National Get Outdoor campaign, it aims to get kids outside. This year had everything from a Leave No Trace bean bag game to the Bryce Canyon sky lab. This year we brought along a selection of artifacts so kids could learn about cultural resource protection.
So why does a conservation organization care if kids go outside?
- In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on their own.(Children & Nature Network, 2008)
- Playing outside helps kids with attention deficit disorder, lowers obesity, & increases social skills.
- The most direct route to caring for the environment as an adult is participating in “wild nature activities” before the age of 11. (Wells and Lekies, 2006)
We’re strong believers that kids who get outside and experience outdoor education grow up to be conscious recreational users.
SUNA Photo Contest
This year we also hosted the SUNA photo contest leading up to GO Day. The SUNA photo contest encourages people to get outside and capture their explorations of Southern Utah – Northern Arizona’s gorgeous landscape on camera. You can see our winners on our facebook page here.
